I Can Rejoice in Suffering
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
Romans 5:3-4
Difficult Times
No one enjoys difficult times, but they seem to be part of life. At one time or another, we’ve all experienced suffering in some form. Maybe it was a financial setback, a relationship that fell apart, or a career that somehow veered off course. It may have been a health issue or even the result of an unfair accusation.
Although we all want to avoid suffering, Jesus said that in this world, we will have tribulations. (John 16:33)
If there was ever anyone who experienced suffering, it was the Apostle Paul. He was wrongfully accused, spent time in a Roman prison, and was even shipwrecked. Even in all these difficulties, he learned to rejoice.
Suffering is Transformational
Paul knew that God used suffering to transform his life and faith. As a Christian, suffering and pain work for you, not against you. Suffering causes a chain-reaction of spiritual growth in your life.
First, suffering produces endurance. Endurance is the ability to move ahead when facing opposition. It’s the tenacity to keep going when others might give up. Endurance is the force that helps you put one foot in front of the other, pressing forward until you see victory.
Second, suffering produces character. As you go through trials, they test your faith and build your Christian character. Challenging times force you to put your faith and trust in the Lord. Like the testing of metal, the fire of trials strengthens your character and heart.
Third, you develop confidence that God will take care of you as you go through difficulties and problems. This confidence shows itself as hope. This hope is not wishful thinking but complete trusting God that He will show Himself strong on your behalf.
No one looks forward to suffering, but we all know it will come. If you are going through a difficult time today, your faith and trust are being strengthened.
Rejoice, knowing God is working to bring you through this difficulty. With each step of faith, God is building your endurance and character to release hope in your darkest days.
Look at that promise again.
Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. – Romans 5:3-4
Make these confessions.
- Pain and suffering are part of life.
- Suffering builds endurance and proven character.
- Difficult times, build hope and trust in God.
- I will rejoice in suffering, knowing God is at work in me.
- In Jesus name,
Amen
It may seem strange for someone to rejoice in difficult times, but when you understand that God works through your difficulties to develop your character, you can rejoice knowing He is working it for your good.

Thank Mark. Still praying for you. – Billy
God has been working in this season of suffering…my health, my marriage, my finances….even my pets…I cannot control what has been happening, but I can rejoice knowing God is with us. Lord, please let us come out this victorious with even greater faith and trust in you. Let each heartache and pain be for your glory and a testimony of your grace and salvation. As my little one says….we are being forged in the fire. Thank you Lord for being with us and holding us when we don’t have the strength to hold on.
