A New Heart and Spirit
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place My Spirit within you and cause you to follow My statutes and carefully observe My ordinances.
Ezekiel 36:26-27
A New Heart
In Christ, you have a new heart. Your old heart has been replaced with a new heart that cries out to walk in fellowship with God.
When you came to Christ, God gave you a new heart. He didn’t repair your old heart. He gave you a new one. God took your old cold heart and replaced it with a new soft heart that was warm to Him. He filled this new heart with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers you to hear His voice and obey His word.
It Begins in the Heart
Your new heart was the beginning of your walk with God. Everything in your life begins in your heart. Obviously, I’m not talking about your physical heart but the inner heart of your soul.
In Matthew 12:4, Jesus said, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Your thoughts, attitudes, and actions all begin in your heart.
Like your physical heart, you must take good care of your spiritual heart. Disobedience, bitterness, and unforgiveness can all cause spiritual heart trouble. Ignoring the voice of the Lord can make your heart cold, hard, and insensitive to God.
A Cold Heart
When your heart grows cold, the things of the Lord no longer excite you as they once did. Your passion for the Lord fades, and you lose the desire to walk in obedience and fellowship with Him.
God is always working to soften your heart and bring you back to Him. God never gives up and is always strengthening the new spiritual heart He gave you.
The Holy Spirit empowers your new heart with a desire to walk with God in fellowship and obedience.
Look at that promise again.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will place My Spirit within you and cause you to follow My statutes and carefully observe My ordinances. – Ezekiel 36:26-27
