Content in Every Situation

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
Philippians 4:11

Finding Contentment

For the committed follower of Christ, there is contentment in every situation.

The Apostle Paul mastered a word that seems so elusive to us today.

“Just a Little More”
We live in a world of “just a little bit more.” If we can just get that new car, new job, new house, or even a new spouse, we would be happy.

So many people just can’t be happy unless their every need or want is met. To make things worse, the line between their needs and wants has become incredibly blurred.

The word Paul had mastered was “contentment.”

Discontentment
We live in a discontented world.

Our lack of contentment causes most of our financial problems. We buy things we can’t afford, hoping they will bring meaning to our lives.

Then, we work harder to buy more things, hoping the newest shiny object will bring satisfaction.

True Contentment
True contentment is not based on your situation or circumstance. True contentment comes from the Lord. The contented person understands you don’t find meaning in what you own. They know contentment begins when you realize who you are in Christ.

Contentment is the opposite of worry, anxiety, and stress. You find true contentment through the peace Christ gives.

The Apostle Paul knew that purpose and meaning in life are not found in what you own but in who you know. The Apostle Paul had very few material possessions. He spent his share of time in a Roman prison, shipwrecked on an island, beaten, and stoned. Yet, he found true contentment in knowing Christ and bringing glory to God in everything he did.

Knowing Christ
You can be content today because you know God will provide all you need. You can be content today because you know true fulfillment isn’t found in what you own or what you have but in your relationship with Christ.

The basis of contentment is living in complete surrender to Christ. He knows what you need even before you ask. When you place your life completely in His hands, you will experience true satisfaction and contentment.

Look at that promise again.

Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. – Philippians 4:11

Make these confessions.

  • In Jesus Christ, I am content.
  • I will not seek meaning through what I own or have.
  • I find purpose and satisfaction in Christ.
  • I am content in every situation in life.

In Jesus’ Name
Amen

You have a choice: you can chase after every “new thing” hoping to find satisfaction, or you can find true contentment through your relationship with Christ.

One thing that can block my contentment in Christ is feeling that I must do something, write something, or sing something that God has called me to do. Then I realize God doesn’t need my help, he just wants my faith, love, and obedience.
