Today’s Promise
God is Loving, Gracious, and Merciful
Psalm 145:8
The Lord is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
What God Says About Himself
The more you know about God, the deeper your faith grows. The more you read the Bible, the more you develop a better understanding of who God is.
This short promise gives us four character qualities of God. Each character quality gives us a better understanding of who God is and how we relate to Him. Let’s look at these four wonderful qualities of the God you serve.
God is Gracious
First, God is gracious. God’s grace is His love in action. Grace is the favor of God. Grace is getting what you don’t deserve. It was God’s grace that sent Jesus into this world to pay the price for your sins.
His grace reached out to you before you ever cared for Him, and His grace keeps you in close fellowship with Him. God’s grace is never-ending and overflows to you. You will never tap the depth of His grace towards you.
God is Merciful
Second, God is merciful. Where grace is getting what don’t deserve, mercy is not getting what you do deserve. God’s mercy is another expression of His love. God’s greatest mercy is the forgiveness of your sin. Your sin debt is paid through the mercy of God. His mercy opens the door to His presence.
God is Slow to Anger
Third, God is slow to anger. Although God is a God of mercy and grace, He is also a just God. Sin always brings about separation from Him. Sin always leads to death. For those who refuse to turn from their sin, judgment will come. However, God is slow to anger. God always gives room for repentance. At times, His anger is poured out in righteous judgment, but only as a last resort. God is patiently giving time for repentance and restoration.
God is Loving
Finally, God is great in lovingkindness. Lovingkindness is commitment love. Some translations call it “loyal love.” It is God’s steadfast love for His people. It is God’s lovingkindness that releases His grace and mercy into your life. I love that the psalmist added “great in.” God is overflowing in his commitment to love you today.
Look at that promise again.
The Lord is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. – Psalm 145:8
Make this confession.
- God’s grace and mercy are flowing over me today.
- God is patient with me as I grow in my walk with Him.
- When I sin, God is slow to anger and gives me time to repent.
- God’s commitment love keeps me in close fellowship with Him.
In Jesus name,
Amen
