God Knows Your Needs Even Before You Ask
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Matthew 6:7-8
Is There a Right Way to Pray?
Since God already knows your needs, before you ask, there is no reason to worry about saying the right thing or using the correct words. Your Heavenly Father already knows your needs and will answer.
In the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus took the time to teach us about prayer. It is so easy to get confused or intimidated when it comes to our prayer life.
In this promise, Jesus warned that prayer isn’t about how long you pray or even how loud you pray. Prayer is all about a conversation between you and your Heavenly Father.
Some people have a filibuster approach to prayer. They think if they can pray long enough, surely God will have to answer their prayers. God is not impressed by the length of your prayers or how many words you use.
The Secret to Praying
Here’s the secret to effective prayer – God already knows what you need before you ask, so simply tell Him what is on your heart.
God is never surprised by your prayer. Like a good father, God knows what is going on in your life.
Since God knows your need, there is no reason to go on and on in prayer. You don’t have to make your prayer sound spiritual or impressive. There is no magic phrase God is looking for when you pray.
The two keys to effective prayer are simplicity and sincerity.
First, your prayers should be simple. Since God already knows your needs, there is no reason for a lot of explanation. You are not going to tell God any new detail He may have missed.
Second, effective prayer is always sincere prayer. Some people pray like they are preaching to God. Others pray for the benefit of those around them. They want everyone to know how spiritual they are. When I am asked how to pray, I just say, tell God what is on your heart. Tell Him your needs, and then, in faith, believe that He will answer.
That may sound too simplistic for some, but I believe it aligns with the way Jesus prayed and how He taught us.
God knows and is sympathetic toward your needs. As a good father, He wants to give good things to you. When you come to Him, talk to Him like He is your Father. Tell Him where it hurts or what the need is, then believe He has heard you.
Leave the guilt, shame, and religion behind. Climb up into your Father’s lap and tell Him what’s on your heart. He already knows and will answer.
Look at that promise again.
And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. – Matthew 6:7-8
Make these confessions.
- I pray simply and with a sincere heart.
- God knows my need even before I ask.
- As a loving Father, He wants to meet my needs.
- When I pray, I simply talk to my Heavenly Father.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. Your prayers don’t have to be long or fancy. Besides, God already knows what you need before you even ask.
