Today’s Promise
I Am the Lord’s Servant
Luke 1:38
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Each day until Christmas, we are looking at the promises of Christmas and seeing what we can learn from them today.
Ordinary People
When God chose to fulfill his promise of salvation to the world, He didn’t choose a famous person or even a wealthy person to accomplish it. God chose a young woman from a no-name family living in a tiny (as we say in Texas “one-horse town) to fulfill the most wonderful promise of all eternity.
God chooses the weak and the powerless to astound the world. He uses the foolish to shame the wise. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
Imagine what was going through Mary’s mind as the angel spoke. How could this happen? What would people think? What would her parents say? What would Joseph say?
All these questions could have given Mary a good reason to say no.
Mary’s Response
However, Mary’s response was a perfect example of the life submitted to the will of God. Instead of arguing with God like Moses or saying how unqualified she was like Gideon, Mary simply stated that she was a servant of the Lord and His will would be done in her life.
You don’t have to be powerful or wise, rich, or famous for God to use you. If God can use a young woman like Mary to fulfill His greatest promise, He can use you beyond your imagination.
God often uses the available and obedient over the talented or powerful.
As we enter into this Christmas season, Mary’s response is a reminder of what our attitude should be. “God, be it unto me according to Your word.” Would you be willing to say, “God, I may not understand, I may not even think it’s possible, but whatever you want in my life, that’s what I want.”
Look at the promise again.
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. – Luke 1:38
Make these confessions.
- God uses the weak and powerless to accomplish His will.
- God uses the available over the talented.
- God, I submit my life to you to use as You will.
- God, I am your servant. Be it unto me according to your word.
In Jesus name,
Amen
