Today’s Promise

January 13, 2021

Jesus Calls Me His Friend

No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
John 15:15

Friend or Slave?

Are you a friend of Jesus, or a slave? How you answer that question will determine how you live the Christian life.

How you see yourself before God makes a big difference in how you live the Christian life.

So many Christians approach God with fear, guilt, and shame because they don’t understand who they are in Christ.

If you see yourself as a slave of Christ, you’ll practice blind obedience to please the master, but there’s little relationship. Slaves just do as they are told. Slaves fear their masters.

But if you see yourself as a friend of Christ, you’ll want to spend time with Him. You will want to know Him. You’ll understand you are always welcome in His presence.

Your best friend knows you better than anyone else. Your best friend know your failures and fears but still love and welcome you.

A Friend of Christ

As a friend of God, even though He knows all your shortcomings, He still loves and welcomes you.

As a friend of God, you are obedient not because you fear Him but because you want to please your friend.

Slaves are tools for completing the master’s will. Friends are partners working together to accomplish the mission. Jesus invites you to partner with Him in bringing about the Kingdom of God.

As a friend of Jesus, you enter boldly into His presence and know that He will welcome you.

As a friend of Jesus, you partner with Him in sharing the Gospel with everyone you know.

Jesus invites you into a life-giving friendship with Him. There is no need to live in fear or shame when Jesus is your friend.

Look at this promise again:

No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. – John 15:15

Make these confessions:

  • Jesus calls me His friend,
  • I am not a slave but a friend.
  • I am His partner in building the Kingdom of God.
  • As His friend, I know Him, and He knows me.

In Jesus Name,
Amen
