New Every Morning

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Galatians 5:22-23

God is faithful. When your world is falling apart, and all you see is darkness, it may not feel like it, but He is faithful. When you face your darkest night, this promise is a reminder that God is faithful, and morning is just around the corner.

Most Christians haven’t spent much time in Lamentations. It is a book of poetic laments on the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. Israel’s sin had led to the devastating destruction of Jerusalem. The prophet had watched as thousands were killed, the walls of the city torn down, and the temple of God was burned.

He writes in Chapter 3:1 – “I am a man who has seen affliction.” If you are like me, you can agree with the prophet. We’ve all seen times of affliction. Times when the walls of our life have fallen, and everything seemed to be burning.

I know in my own life there have been dark times when I wasn’t sure I was going to make it. Times when depression and fear were knocking on my door, wanting to ravage my faith.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness

In the midst of all the despair, the prophet writes in verse 21, “This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope.” What did he remember? What was it that gave him hope? That God is faithful.

Remembering how God has worked in our lives in the past builds a defiant hope that withstands any problems and struggles of the day. Looking back over your life, you can see the hand of God working again and again. You see how His love has provided and protected you so many times in the past. You can agree with the prophet Samuel when God brought supernatural victory over the Philistines. The prophet Samuel set up a remembrance stone and declared in 1 Samuel 7:12, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

Can I remind you today that, thus far, God has helped you? If He helped you in the past, why would He not continue to do so? God has been and will continue to be your faithful friend, provider, and guide.

This verse begins with “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses.” Lovingkindness is a beautiful Old Testament word. It means God’s loyal love. It is love that refuses to abandon us. It is love based on commitment, not emotion. God loves His people, not because they are worthy, but because He has promised to do so.

Lovingkindness is love that is not based on performance. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love Him because He first loved us.” God’s lovingkindness goes beyond our performance. Also, His love has no end. You can never come to the end of God’s love or deplete his endless supply of grace and mercy for you. You can have hope today because God’s love goes beyond your failures and faithlessness. His love will pour over you, even in your lowest times. His love and care for you are enough for today and tomorrow. His lovingkindness knows no end.

His Compassions Never Fail

Not only does God’s lovingkindness never cease, but His compassions never fail. Compassion is the picture of a loving mother caring for her newborn baby. The baby is never far from her sight, and when her baby cries, she is right there ready to care for it.

When Jesus saw the hungry crowds, He was moved with compassion and fed them with the five loaves and two fish. He had compassion for the blind man and healed him. He had compassion for the grieving mother and raised her son from the dead. When Jesus stood before His friend’s grave, the Bible says He cried. But then Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. God is not only moved by our struggles, but He also does something about them. God has an unending supply of love, kindness, provision, and compassion for you.

“They are new every morning.” The word “new” here means fresh. It often refers to something revived or made fresh again. It carries with it the idea of vitality. God’s lovingkindness and compassion are not recycled from yesterday. There are no leftovers when it comes to God’s lovingkindness. Every day brings fresh mercy to you and me. Every day, God opens the storehouse of His grace to us.

Manna in the wilderness is a perfect example of God’s daily mercy. Every day, God provided what those wandering in the wilderness needed. There was no need to save up for tomorrow because each day brought enough. God was teaching His children daily dependence upon Him, and He does the same for us today.

New Every Morning

God’s lovingkindness and compassion are new every morning. In scripture, morning represents the moment when God turns darkness into light. Psalm 30:5 says, “Weeping may last for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” The night may be long, but morning always arrives. I have never woken up with the thought, “I wonder if the sun will come up today?” It may be cloudy or stormy, but the sun will still come up. In the same way, God’s lovingkindness is there to welcome you each morning.

In your darkest night, you will still see the sunrise of God’s mercy.

The prophet ends with a declaration of God’s character. “Great is Thy faithfulness.” Notice he doesn’t say great “will be” or great “has been,” but great IS Thy faithfulness. In this difficult time, Jeremiah declares his hope in God. You don’t have to wait to see God’s faithfulness; it is right there in front of you!

In Matthew 6:34, Jesus said, “So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself.” Tomorrow’s strength will arrive tomorrow. God’s provision will come when it is needed, and not before.

God’s faithfulness is an expression of His character. He is faithful by His nature. It is who He is. Faithfulness means trustworthiness. Since God’s character never changes, you can trust that His love and mercy for you will always be the same. His promises are stable and secure.

I need God’s faithful love and mercy every day. I understand my life is fragile, and all too often so is my faith. God’s faithfulness keeps me going.

The Morning Will Come

Just like the prophet Jeremiah, your sunny day can suddenly plunge into the darkest of nights. You get the results of a medical test, and they aren’t good. A layoff suddenly finds you looking for a job. That relationship that meant so much suddenly falls apart, and you find yourself alone. You feel the darkness closing in.

Satan tries his best to convince you that the night will never end. That darkness and despair are your “new normal.” He wants you chained to the problems and sorrows of yesterday, but God brings each day as a fresh start.

When you remember God’s committed love, you see the breaking of a new dawn. When morning comes, the darkness recedes, and a new season of life begins. You see God’s mercy and love flowing through your life, reminding you that He is faithful.

Every sunrise is God’s reset button

Every sunrise is God’s reset button. The darkness passes, and a whole new supply of God’s love and mercy is released into your life. Remember, today’s mercy and grace are greater than yesterday’s failures. God’s mercy will meet you where you are and take you to where you need to be.

So, when the night is dark, how do we remember that God is faithful? Here are four ways you can live out this promise today.

  1. Begin each day with a review of God’s mercy. (v21)
Before you check your phone or start your day, welcome God’s lovingkindness. Realize that a fresh supply of God’s grace and mercy is available to you today. By faith, invite them into your life. The Psalmist said, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life.” Wherever you go today, God’s goodness and mercy will follow you.
  1. Review God’s faithfulness.
Choose one area of your life that you are concerned about and remember all the times God has worked on your behalf in the past. Just like the prophet Jeremiah, as you review God’s faithfulness, new hope springs forth in your heart. Write down one specific way God has helped you in the past. Let your history with the Lord strengthen your faith today.
  1. Trust God’s faithfulness
Instead of focusing on the things that worry you, why not focus your heart on God’s faithfulness? Decide to trust in God’s faithfulness today. Don’t bring the worries of yesterday into the new day God has given you. Trust Him for today. Every new day requires a renewed commitment to trusting God’s faithfulness.
  1. Confess His Faithfulness
There is power in declaring your trust in God. Make an open confession of your trust in God’s faithfulness. Say it out loud so your heart can hear it. Agree with the prophet Samuel and say, “Thus far the Lord has helped me.” (1 Samuel 7:12) Since the Lord has helped you thus far, why would He not continue to help you today and tomorrow?

Here is a simple example of a confession you could make each day.

“Today, I am trusting in God’s faithfulness. God has a new shipment of grace and mercy for me today. I can never deplete His lovingkindness. He has been faithful in the past and will continue to be faithful today and forever. I place my hope and trust in Him. I will not be disappointed.”

As you begin each day trusting and confessing your trust in the Lord, your faith will grow, and hope will fill your heart and life. These steps will shift your perspective from despair to hope and anchor your hope in God’s faithfulness.

Finally, imagine standing on a sandy beach, watching wave after wave splash against the sandy shore. Just as one wave hits the shore, another one follows right behind it. Try as you might, you could never count them all. They just keep coming.

In the same way, God’s love, grace, and mercy never stop reaching you. Great is His faithfulness!
