The Savior Who Was Born of a Virgin
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Matthew 1:23
This week we are looking at the promises of God related to the coming of Christ. The virgin birth is more than a nice Christmas story. Without the virgin birth, Jesus could have never been the Savior of the world.
Born of a Virgin
After the angel appeared to Mary, he appeared to her future husband, Joseph, in a dream. The angel told Joseph that even though Mary was a virgin, she would have a son. That son would be the promised Messiah.
The promise of the virgin birth is central to the Christian faith. Without the virgin birth, Jesus was just one more good teacher or religious leader. Here are four reasons why the virgin birth is essential to the Christian faith.
First, it shows the uniqueness of Jesus. Jesus was more than a good teacher or wise prophet. He was more than a religious leader or sage. Jesus was God poured out in a man. He was fully God and fully man in one person. He had an earthly mother but a heavenly Father. Jesus was divine.
Second, it showed His sinless perfection. The Bible says that sin came into this world through Adam. (Romans 5:12) Since God was his father, Jesus didn’t carry the sinful nature of Adam. He had the divine nature of His Heavenly Father.
Third, it broke the chain of sin. Just as sin came into this world through one man, righteousness and grace came into the world through Jesus. Jesus is the new Adam who redeems us from the power of sin brought about by the first Adam.
Fourth, He showed us the character of God. Jesus was just like His Heavenly Father. Hebrews 1:3 says that Jesus was the exact representation of God. He showed us the full character and personality of God. If you want to know what God is like, look at the life of Jesus.
His virgin birth confirmed Jesus as the Savior of the world. As the Savior, He offers you peace, forgiveness, and eternal life. The promise of Christmas is the promise of new life in Christ.
Look at the promise again.
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). – Matthew 1:23
Make these confessions.
- Jesus was the Savior, born of a virgin.
- He broke the chain of sin that Adam began.
- Jesus had an earthly mother but a Heavenly Father.
- I find peace, forgiveness, and eternal life in Him.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
The virgin birth sets Jesus apart from all other religious leaders. He was more than a good teacher or an enlightened spiritual leader. He was the Messiah who would save us from our sins.
