You are the Light of the World
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Matthew 5:14
You are the Light
As a follower of Christ, you are the light of the world. You don’t have to try and be the light because the light of Christ is in you.
Jesus brought light into a world filled with darkness. Sin had plunged the world into a dark night of despair and hopelessness, but Jesus came as the shining light of hope, salvation, and freedom. In John 8:12, He promised that those who followed Him would not walk in darkness but in the light.
Those who walk in the light experience clarity. When you turn on a light, your way becomes clear. When you can’t read the small print, what do you do? You move it closer to the light. As you walk in the light of Christ, life’s decisions become clearer, and the obstacles on the road ahead become apparent.
Those who walk in the light also experience security. The shadows of fear disappear when you turn on the light. We have all awoke in the middle of the night, seeing a shadow in our room. Once the light was on, you see, there was no reason to be afraid. A bright light chases away predators, dangers, and fear.
Those who walk in the light experience guidance. Years ago, I did a scuba dive at night. The water was pitch black, but the divemaster had a yellow light on his tanks. As long as I could see that yellow light, I knew which way to go. Highway signs are lit, so you know when to turn. God leads and shows you which way to go when you walk in the light.
Don’t “Try,” Be!
Jesus took things to the next level when He declared that you are the light. He was the light of the world; now, you are the light of the world. You bring clarity, security, and guidance into the world around you.
Jesus didn’t say, “Try really hard to be the light.” He declared, “You are the light!” Strike a match, and it doesn’t try and be the light. By its nature, it shines brightly. No amount of darkness can overpower the smallest light. The darker the setting, the brighter the light.
As the light of the world, you bring the light of God’s kingdom into every situation. You shine brightly because the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Look at that promise again.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. – Matthew 5:14
Make these confessions.
- In Jesus Christ, I am the light of the world.
- I am a city set on a hill.
- I bring the kingdom of God into every situation of life.
- I walk in clarity, security, and guidance.
- I bring the Father’s light to a world of darkness.
In Jesus’ Name,
