Today’s Promise

Buried With Christ, Alive in Him

Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:3-4

Dead in Christ

It may be a little hard to understand, but right now, you are dead in Christ. Your death in Christ gives you new freedom and power to live the Christian life.

It may seem strange, but according to this promise, you are dead. When you gave your life to Christ and by faith accepted Him as your Savior and Lord, you were crucified with Christ. Your old life died with Christ on the cross.

The Great Mystery

One of the great mysteries of the New Testament is our union with Christ. No matter how we may try to illustrate or explain that union, we always fall short of how incredible our union with Christ really is.

Water baptism is a picture of your union with Christ in death and life. When you were immersed in the water, it was a symbol of your death in Christ. When you were lifted out of the water, it symbolized your new life in Christ.

Your death in Christ opened the doors for several things to happen.

1. Your death in Christ buried your past sins and failures. When you died with Christ, your sin debt was paid, and your old life passed away. Jesus took on your sin while on the cross. There is no need to look back at your past failures; they are part of your old life, and that life passed away.

2. Your death in Christ opened the door for resurrection. You can’t have a resurrection without a death. Your new life in Christ is only possible because your old life has died. In Ephesians 4, Paul commands us to take off the old life and put on the new life in Christ. When you were baptized, your pastors probably said something to the effect of, “Buried with Christ in baptism, raised to walk in newness of life.” Your death in Christ opened the door for the new life you have in Him.

3. Your death in Christ broke the power of sin in your life. Before you came to Christ, you were a slave to your sin. You had no power to resist Satan’s temptations. As a Christian, that power is broken. Dead people don’t sin. Because you are dead in Christ, sin has no power over you.

Look at that verse again.

Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. – Romans 6:3-4

Make these confessions.

  • I am dead in Christ.
  • When Jesus died on the cross, I died with Him.
  • I am dead to sin’s power over me.
  • Since I am dead in Christ, I am alive through His resurrection.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen

Today, walk as one who is dead in Christ and alive to new life.

Its probably partly from getting older, but since I got saved 20 years ago I have felt less connected to my past sins and feel much less desire to sin.
