Today’s Promise

Call His Name Emmanuel

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

Emmanuel

Each day until Christmas, we are looking at the promises of Christmas and seeing what we can learn from them today.

The prophet Isaiah prophesied the birth of Jesus seven hundred years before Christ was born. Today’s promise focuses on the last word of that prophecy.

Immanuel. When the angel appeared to Joseph in Matthew 1, he quoted this prophecy then adds a definition of the word Immanuel; God with us.

When the children of Israel traveled through the wilderness, God was with them in the tabernacle. He would lead and guide them through the desert.

People could look to the tabernacle and see the cloud and the fire, and know that God was with them.

God With Us

The promise of Christmas was that God would move from the tabernacle and the temple to God walking among us. Because of the manger, God would dwell with His people. God would take on flesh and bone. Jesus was the great creator wrapped in a human body.

Because Jesus is with us, He knows the frailties and difficulties we face. He knows hunger and what it is like to be exhausted. He knows temptation and the sting of betrayal. The God you serve knows what it is like to be human.

Through faith in Christ, the God who dwelt among us now lives within us. God has moved from the tabernacle to the heart of men and women.

God With You

Because God is with you, you need never be alone again. Because God is with you, you never have to fear. Because God is with you, He is only a prayer away.

Look at the promise again.

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. – Isaiah 7:14

Make this confession.

  • Immanuel, God is with us.
  • Since Jesus walked among us, He knows the struggles I face.
  • Because God is with me, I am never alone.
  • Because God is with me, He is only a prayer away.

In Jesus name,
Amen
