For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
John the Baptist describes the coming Messiah, Jesus, as the one who would speak the words of God and give the Holy Spirit without measure. Jesus walked in the complete presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus, the Holy Spirit worked in the lives of prophets, kings, and leader on a limited basis.
They were led or filled with the Spirit for a specific time or for a particular purpose. When Jesus came, He received the Holy Spirit without measure, or limit.
Throughout His ministry, Jesus promised those who followed Him would receive the Holy Spirit; this time without measure. The Holy Spirit would not come and go in the lives of His followers but would take up residence in them. His followers would live and minister in the abundant power of the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus walked in the Spirit without measure, so would His disciples.
In John 7:38, Jesus described the indwelling of the Holy Spirit as living water that comes gushing up and overflowing from our innermost being.
Today, Jesus promises you the full measure of the Holy Spirit. He doesn’t want you to be filled with just a little of the Spirit, but to live with the Holy Spirit overflowing in every area of your life. He desires you to live with the power of the Holy Spirit spilling out to the world around you.
So many Christians know so little of the Holy Spirit. He has become the silent partner of the Trinity. Many are confused or afraid of the Holy Spirit but the Holy Spirit should never be feared or ignored.
The only way you can live the Christian life is through the power of the Holy Spirit within you. Jesus promises you a life filled with the Holy Spirit without measure. His Holy Spirit will overflow in power to the world around you.
Look at that promise once again.
For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. – John 3:34 (ESV)
Confess this with me.
Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would indwell in me.
I have the Holy Spirit without measure.
The Holy Spirit is filling and empowering me.
He is guiding and directing me today.
His presence is overflowing to the world around me.
