My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
At times we all struggle with sin, but we have a promise that Jesus is on our side.
When you became a Christian, Jesus forgave your sin and gave you His rightness before God. He empowered you with the Holy Spirit so you could live a life of obedience to God.
Although you may try to live a life of holiness and obedience, there are times when you fall into sin. Instead of feeling guilty and condemned for what you have done, remember Jesus is on your side. He stands between you and God the Father, and His blood forgives your sin.
The promise describes Jesus as your advocate.
An advocate is someone who comes alongside a person to help. An advocate is like a lawyer who pleads a case before a judge.
Jesus stands between you and God. Instead of God seeing your sin, He sees the righteousness of Jesus in you. Instead of condemning your sin, He sees the spilled blood of Jesus that paid the price for all your sin. There is no condemnation or judgment because your sin debt has been paid in full.
Sure, when you sin the Holy Spirit convicts you of your sin, but He doesn’t condemn you, He works in your life to bring you back to God. He wants to restore your relationship with God.
When you sin, Jesus is on your side. He stands and pleads your case before God the Father. His blood covers your sin so that all God sees your Christ’s rightness before Him.
Look at that promise again.
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. – 1 John 2:1
Make this confession.
God has called me to live a holy life.
If I sin, I have Jesus to stand before God on my behalf.
My sin has been forgiven and removed by the blood of Jesus.
Jesus is my advocate before the Father.
In Jesus name,
