Today’s Promise

God Gives Me Wisdom and Revelation

Ephesians 1:17

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.

Wisdom

The Apostle Paul opens the book of Ephesians with a prayer for the church in Ephesus. Today, we are claiming that same prayer for ourselves.

First, Paul prays that God will give us a spirit of wisdom. Wisdom and knowledge are two different things. A person may have lots of knowledge but little wisdom. Knowledge is about facts. Wisdom is about living. Wisdom is understanding and knowing the true nature of life.

Wisdom knows how to live in line with the will of God. God gave Joshua a spirit of wisdom so he could take over Moses’s position of leadership. James says if anyone lacks wisdom, let him ask the Lord. True wisdom only comes from the Lord.

Revelation

Second, Paul prays we receive revelation in the knowledge of God. You only know God through revelation. You can know about God through reading the Bible, but it takes revelation from the Holy Spirit to move God’s word from your head to your heart. Some of the meanest Christians I’ve met know the Bible; however, they have never allowed the Holy Spirit to teach them spiritual truth. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to teach us all things. (John 16:14)

The Holy Spirit illuminates our hearts and minds to understand the thing of the Lord. Paul is praying the Holy Spirit would reveal to us the Lord Jesus.

Before you came to Christ, spiritual things were a mystery. You might have known the Bible, but you couldn’t really know the Lord Jesus. Now that the Holy Spirit resides in you, He teaches you, gives you wisdom, and reveals to you the Lord Jesus.

Look at that verse again.

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him. – Ephesians 1:17

Make this confession.

  • I have a spirit of wisdom.
  • The Holy Spirit is revealing Christ to me.
  • Father, answer Paul’s prayer in my life today.
  • Lord, give me a deeper knowledge of who you are.

In Jesus Name,
Amen

Please pray for me as we embark on encouraging churches to pray for their pastors. I believe this will make a major difference in the lives of pastors and churches across the country.
