Today’s Promise
God Trains Me Because He Loves Me
Proverbs 3:11-12
My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
God Loves You
Because God loves you, He sometimes has to correct you. He does that to make you stronger and to bring you back to Himself. He always does it out of love.
When God repeats Himself in scripture, it’s never without purpose. You should always pay attention to the spiritual truth that shows up in both the Old and New Testament.
The book of Hebrews quotes this promise in chapter 12, verse 5-6, so we might want to listen up.
God Doesn’t Punish His Children
Many people see the discipline of the Lord as God punishing His children. When something bad happens, their first thought is that God is punishing them. They don’t see God as the loving Father who desires the best for them.
This verse is more about training than punishment. God is always working in your life for your good. The only way a muscle grows is by putting it under stress. When you lift weights, you are building your muscles by pushing them to their limit.
God allows various trials in your life to build your faith and trust in Him. As your faith is tested, it grows and develops.
God Loves His Children
As a father, I want the best for my children. My child may feel like I am limited his freedom because I don’t let him play in the street. He may not be excited about being forced to do his homework, but it is for his good. Because I love Him, I bring discipline in his life.
A father who doesn’t train his children doesn’t love them. A child needs to be disciplined and trained to grow to be a responsible adult. God loves you so much that He will not allow you to stay the way you are. He works in your life to grow your faith.
Never resent God when you face trials. Every problem is an opportunity for God to take you to the next level of your faith and walk with Him.
Look at the at promise one more time.

Confess this after me.
- God’s discipline is always for my good.
- Because He loves me, He tests and stretches my faith.
- I don’t always enjoy discipline, but it makes me spiritual mature.
- I welcome His discipline because it makes me more like Him.
