Today’s Promise

I Am Strong and Courageous

Joshua 1:9

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Be Strong

This promise has been one of my favorite verses for many years. I can’t think of a better promise for us today.

Joshua had just taken the place of Moses as the leader of the Children of God. They had entered the promised land and were facing multiple enemies that were stronger and mightier than them. I’m sure Joshua must have thought, “What have I gotten myself into?”

Three Times

Three times in verses six through nine, God tells Joshua to be strong and take courage. God says the same thing to you and me today.

If you are like me, it’s hard to stand strong when you are faced with so much bad news. You can’t listen to the radio, watch TV, or go online without being bombarded with messages of fear and doom.

From moment-by-moment updates on the Coronavirus to social uprisings and the election, we face problems we don’t know how to solve.

For most of us, our world has been turned upside down. We are working from home, many of our favorite restaurants are closed, and we can’t even meet someone at Starbucks.

With all that is going on, it is easy for the dark shadows of fear to rise up inside us.

Take Courage

In all this, God says, be strong, and take courage. You may be thinking that’s easier said than done, but God gives us a word of instruction and a promise.

We can be strong, take courage as we walk in obedience to Him. With so many of our churches meeting online, it’s easy to let our faith slip.

In verse 8, God tells Joshua that if he will meditate and obey His Word, Joshua would have success.

Maybe instead of binging on the latest Netflix series or watching the constant flow of news related to the virus, you could spend a little extra time in God’s word this week. Your fear will subside, and your faith will increase.

Second, you can be strong and courageous because God is with you. Even when you are stuck at home with all the kids, God is right there with you. His presence is with you right now.

When you see all the fear and worry around you, remember, God is with you.

Look at that promise again.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9

Make this confession.

  • I am strong and courageous.
  • I will not fear, for God is with me.
  • I walk according to the Word of God.
  • No enemy can stand before me, for God is fighting for me.

In Jesus name,

As you face your greatest challenge or your strongest enemy, remember, God is with you.

Here are a couple of quick, practical suggestions.

1.  Limit your watching of the news. You really don’t need a moment-by-moment update on the virus. Watching the news 24/7 will only raise your level of fear.

2.  Spend some extra time in prayer and Bible reading. This will build your faith and give you hope.

3.  Remember, God is with you today.

Thank you Billy for this great reminder! My sister is slowly coming back from covid-19, my mom is in a nursing facility, and I work in a school. I know that God always is with us, and I feel that this all is a reminder that He is the most important in our lives now and for eternity. May this bring more people than ever to accept God as their Lord and Savior.
