Let the Word of Christ Dwell in You

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:16

Every Command is a Promise

Every command of God carries with it a promise. God always empowers us to accomplish what He has commanded. In today’s promise, we see a command and a promise.

Today, we are focusing on the first few words of this verse. “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you.” The Apostle Paul commands us to let the word of Christ infiltrate every area of our lives. We are to let it dwell in us richly.

The word of Christ is the teachings of Christ. However, it is more than just His specific words; it is all the teachings of the Bible.

Dwell in You

How do you allow the word of Christ to dwell in you? The term “dwell” means to take up residence. Letting the word of Christ dwell in you allows God’s word to become such a part of your heart and mind that it is entirely at home in you.

It’s the picture of a good friend who comes to your house and feels welcomed and relaxed. Some people are only given access to the living room, or perhaps the kitchen, but a good friend can make themselves at home in every room in your house. They see the dirty garage and the cluttered closet. We invite them to “make themselves at home.” Allowing Christ’s words to dwell in you gives them access to every area of your life.

Here are four ways to allow Christ’s words to dwell in you.

First, you allow the word of Christ to dwell in you by getting to know the Bible. God’s primary method of speaking to you is through the Bible. The more you know God’s Word, the easier it is for Him to speak to you.

Second, you allow the word of Christ to dwell in you by living in obedience to His word. The more you obey the Word of God, the more your heart is open to His voice. As you obey His Word, your mind, heart, and attitudes change into the likeness of Christ.

Third, the more the word of Christ dwells in you, the more it becomes your standard of truth. As you allow God’s word deep into your heart, His word becomes your word. The word of Christ becomes a natural part of your thinking and speech.

Finally, don’t stop at just letting the word of Christ dwell in you. Let it dwell in you richly. There is always more of His word to receive.

As the Word of Christ dwells in you richly, you will develop a new level of wisdom in everything you do. God’s wisdom will become a part of you. You become an encouragement to everyone around you.

Look at that promise once again.

Make these confessions.

  • The word of Christ is at home in my heart.
  • I am completely yielded to the word of Christ.
  • The word of Christ empowers every area of my life.
  • I am growing in wisdom as I allow His word to dwell in me.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly so you can live with wisdom and encourage everyone around you.

Thank you for this “word” today. Like psalm 119 says, “I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have given me Life.”
