The Word of God is Living and Powerful
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Word of God
Though the Bible was written hundreds of years ago, it is still as relevant as the morning news. Some people think of the Bible as a book of history or religious teaching. For the Christian, the Bible is a love letter written by their Heavenly Father.
As a follower of Christ, the Bible has the final say in every discussion, teaching, and inspiration. The Bible is the foundation for Christian living. God will never tell you to do something that is counter to what the Bible teaches.
The Bible is a living book. Like no other book, the Bible speaks to the heart of its reader. The Bible is literally the word of God in written form.
The Word of God is Active
The Word of God is “active.” That word literally means “energizing.” As you read the Bible, God energizes your inner spirit and heart. Your spirit is encouraged and empowered as you read, study, and meditate on God’s word.
When you seem to be going through a dry spell in your Christian life, get into the word, and allow it to energize your spirit. You will find new life and encouragement as you dig into God’s word.
A Two-Edged Sword
This promise describes the Bible as a two-edged sword. This type of sword was short, pointed, and sharp on both sides. It was used in hand-to-hand combat. Like the sword, the Word of God can penetrate our innermost parts and cut through the hardest of hearts. It can expose selfish attitudes and sinful habits.
If you are like me, there have been times as I’ve read the Bible that a verse or a passage would seem to jump off the page. I could feel God’s word penetrate deep in my heart.
God’s word is so sharp that it can separate all excuses and lay waste to any deception.
Healing and Comfort
The Bible also can bring healing and comfort in the darkest of times. Often as I read the Psalms, I’ve sensed the Holy Spirit mending hurts and healing wounds.
Finally, the Word of God teaches me who I am in Christ, who my Father is, and how to walk in the Holy Spirit’s power.
Every time you read it, God speaks.
Look at that promise again.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. – Hebrews 4:12
