You Are the Light of the World
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Matthew 5:14
In today’s promise, Jesus says you are the light of the world.
Light of the World
Jesus came as light into a world filled with darkness. The darkness of sin had overcome the world. He brought a shining hope of salvation and freedom. In John 8:12, Jesus promised that those who followed Him would not walk in darkness but would walk in the light.
Those who walk in the light experience clarity. When you turn on a light, your path becomes clear. When you can’t read the small print, what do you do? You turn on more lights. As you walk in the light of Christ, life’s decisions seem clearer. When you walk in the light, you can clearly see what’s ahead.
Those who walk in the light experience security. The shadows of fear disappear when you turn on the light. We have all had that experience of waking up and seeing a shadow in our room. Once you turned on the light, you saw there was no reason to be afraid. A bright light chases away every fear.
When you walk in the light, you receive guidance. Years ago, I went scuba diving at night. The water was pitch black, but the divemaster had a yellow light on his tanks. As long as I followed the yellow light, I knew which way to go. They put lights on highway signs so you know when to turn. When you walk in the light, God shows you the way.
You are the Light of the World
Jesus took things to the next level when He declared that you are the light. He was the light of the world; now, you are the light of the world. You are to bring clarity, security, and guidance to life’s situations.
Jesus didn’t say, “Try real hard to be the light.” He declared, “You are the light!” Strike a match, and you have light. The match doesn’t have to try and be the light. By its nature, it shines brightly. No amount of darkness can overpower the smallest of lights. The darker the setting, the brighter the light.
As the light of the world, you bring the light of God’s kingdom into every situation.
Look at that promise one more time.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. – Matthew 5:14
Make these confessions.
- In Jesus Christ, I am the light of the world.
- I am a city set on a hill.
- I bring the kingdom of God into every situation of life.
- I walk in clarity, security, and guidance.
- I bring the Father’s light to a world of darkness.

Just as Jesus declared He was the light of the Lord. You are now that light. You bring the light of Christ into every situation of life. As the light of the world, let your light shine.
